MCCAIN AND HIS NUCLEAR ENERGY PLAN
Wednesday, August 6th, 2008Despite condescending remarks by Obama, John McCain’s nuclear energy plans are one of the answers for tomorrow. When criticized about the safety of nuclear plants and the accident near Detroit in 1975, let’s be honest and admit that all industries at one time or another have had accidents, oil industry such as the Valdez spill in Alaska, coal mines collapsing, sugar plant blowing up and so on. This is part of the technological beast and the pros and cons should be weighed and concluded that the pros more than outbalance the cons.
Yes, we must ensure safe waste removal and ascertain no long term side effects to the environment and its living beings – humans, animals and vegetation -, and it goes without saying that all efforts to ensure all of the above will be taken. One option for storage of radioactive waste would be reprocessing spent nuclear fuel as is done in France and other European countries.
At the conclusion of his speech in Newport, Michigan, McCain pledges to build 45 new nuclear plants by 2030, to be added to the already 104 operating ones.
